Dr. Margaret Mafe

Dr Margaret AribiyoMafe, born on the 6th of September, 1952 had her primary and secondary education at Mount Carmel Primary School Ebute-Metta, Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagosand Fulham County Girls Grammar School, London between1957-1971.She obtained her first degree from Aston University, Birmingham in 1974 and a Master degree in Medical Parasitology fromLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1975.She obtainedDoctor of Philosophy degree inCommunity Medicine from Ahmadu Bello University in 1982.She started her career as an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Health, Ahmadu Bello University in 1976 and subsequently joined the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in 1979 as a Research Fellow. She was the Head of Public Health Division from 1992-2006, during which period, she was appointed a Director, Public Health in 2005. She also headed the Institute’s Public Health Outstation in New Bussa, Kainji in the then Kwara State, now in Niger State. She was the Acting Director of NIMR in 1986 to 1887. She became the National focal person forResearch at the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja in 2006. She was subsequently appointed Director of the Department of Health Planning,Research and Statistics of the Federal Ministry of Health in 2007, a position she held till June 2008. She was Secretary to the National Health Research Ethics Committee of the Ministry between 2006 and 2008. She was later deployed back to Nigerian Institute of Medical Research where she headed the Health Systems and Policy Research Group till her retirement in 2017.She has and had served in many capacities, both national and international such as:

  • National Expert Committee on Schistosomiasis Control
  • Member, National Onchocerciasis Elimination Committee.
  • Member, National Expert Committee on Neglected Tropical Diseases
  • Member, National Health Research Ethics Committee


  • Chairman, Lagos State Advisory Committee on Neglected Tropical Diseases
  • W.H.O Afro Consultant for Schistosomiasis Control
  • Member Advisory Committee Research Network On Schistosomiasis In Africa
  • Member, WHO Headquarters, (Geneva), Advisory Group on morbidity due to schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths
  • Member, WHO/AFRO Regional Program Review Group on Preventive Chemotherapy-Neglected Tropical Diseases 2014-2019
  • WHO/AFRO Regional Program Review Group on Preventive Chemotherapy-Neglected Tropical Diseases Liaison for South Africa, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone
  • Local Scientific Expert for GTZ/ LAFIA Primary Health Care Project, Minna, Niger State
  • Consultant to WHO/AFRO on Strategy and Policy for Control of schistosomiasis, Lymphatic filiariasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis

Her other activities include co-supervision of both M.Sc. and PhD students. She also serves as scientific reviewer for some journals both local and international. She has been a recipient of a number of Fellowship awards including for :Course on Community Research and Evaluation Program, University Of Connecticut Health Centre, Farmington, USA, and,Fellowship of Swiss Commission for Research Partnership with Developing Countries (KFPE) among others.

Dr Mafe is a life member of the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria.She has over 70 publications in peer reviewed journals.She is a Christian andis happily married and blessed with three children.
